Weather conditions are key factors for determining fire danger. Weather also strongly influences fire behaviour. The Forestry Division maintains a year round fire weather forecast office, which employs three fire weather meteorologists and one technician, to monitor changes in weather conditions which influence the fire environment. The weather section is responsible for:

  • Producing two fire weather forecasts per day during the fire season (April to October.)
  • Providing weather expertise for fire management activities (including wildfire suppression, prescribed burns, Forest Health programs, presuppression planning, and resource deployment.)
  • Managing and archiving fire weather data from an extensive network of manned and automated weather stations, and the lightning detection system.
  • Supplying technical support to fire control training courses, especially fire weather and fire behaviour instruction.
