FireSmart

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) and the Ministry of Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) are proud to announce the completion of the following documents:

These documents will be a valuable resource for the upstream industry in preventing wildfires, and to reducing the impact of catastrophic fires on industry infrastructure, operations, liability, personnel safety, and the environment.

Each year industrial activity ranks as the third highest of all human-caused wildfires in Alberta. By adopting and using the principles in the FireSmart Guidebook and Best Management Practices, industry can enhance their environmental stewardship and prevent the accidental start of future wildfires.

Using these publications can have many benefits to industry, including:

  • Increased safety for personnel
  • Reduced risk to industry infrastructure from wildfires
  • More secure production schedules less likely to be disrupted in the event of a wildfire
  • Reduced liability for industry-caused wildfires
  • Increased environmental stewardship and overall corporate responsibility

CAPP and SRD would like to thank the many contributing partners who worked together to develop these publications. Stay tuned for the next phase of the project where an Operational Handbook will be developed for field operators, which will integrate information from the FireSmart Guidebook, Best Management Practices and Industrial Wildlife Control and Prevention Plan.

Printed copies of the FireSmart Guidebook and Best management practices are now available and can be ordered by contacting Partners in Protection.
