Range Management
Last review/updated: May 11, 2004
One of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development's core businesses is the effective management of rangeland on the province's public land. With about 3.4 million hectares of grazing land used by livestock producers under various forms of dispositions, this management task is a significant responsibility that the department shares with ranchers and farmers looking at new areas for grazing, cultivation and sale.
The ministry plays a key role in rangeland management through the following:
- determining land suitable for sale or lease,
- monitoring of existing grazing conditions,
- coordinating inventories on existing and potential agricultural land,
- conducting applied research, and
- communicating information about sustainable range management to Albertans.
Securing Alberta's public rangeland grazing for the long term is a key objective for Sustainable Resource Development. We encourage good stewardship practices by livestock producers to help meet that long-term objective.
A balanced approach to rangeland management is the result of a framework of policy, legislation and regulations that maximizes the benefits to Albertans from public rangelands. Such an approach supports multiple use and multiple resource values.
