The use of public land is authorized under the Public Lands Act for a variety of purposes. Dispositions for community-based cultural and recreational activities are approved as recreational leases.
Municipalities, agricultural societies incorporated under the Agricultural Societies Act or other incorporated societies can obtain a recreational lease for the following types of activities:
- municipal parks
- playgrounds
- campgrounds
- community halls
- skating arenas
- sports fields
- equestrian facilities
- agricultural society facilities
- fairgrounds
Applications
Applications for recreational leases must be accompanied by a location plan that meets current department standards and a detailed description of the proposal. All recreational leases must be accessible by the general public.
Terms and Conditions
The maximum term for a recreational lease is 25 years. However, the specific term depends on the nature of the proposed development, community needs and the basic factors of supply and demand that influence site availability.
The current rental rate is a one-time lump sum payment of $10 per acre (minimum $100). All new and existing recreational leases (excluding those held by municipalities) require a security deposit based on the cost of site reclamation.
Lease Renewal
Prior to renewal, all recreational leaseholders receive a renewal information letter specific to their lease that requests the following:
- a location plan outlining the extent of the existing lease boundary, in accordance with current department plan standards
- a site plan indicating the existing developments and any proposed facilities
- a written submission outlining the current use of the existing lease and confirming site accessibility by the general public
Miscellaneous Lease
Proponents requiring exclusive use of the site for their membership (registered as non-profit organizations) may be issued a miscellaneous lease at the current non-profit annual rental rate of $5 per acre (minimum $50).
