Aerial Survey Data
Aerial surveys are conducted over known infestation areas and high risk areas of the province. Current data are provided for the latest survey year and historic data provided in groups of five years. Survey data has also been provided in two standard projections; Ten Degree Transverse Mercator (10TM) coverages are provided for the entire province, and Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coverages are provided for the west and east parts of the province. UTM coverages may be in UTM Zone 11 or 12, depending on which Zone most of the coverage falls in. An ESRI Arc/Info export file (*.e00) is zipped with a metadata (general information) file and a document of user terms and conditions, both in Microsoft® Word 97 format. For more information about data assumptions, GIS standards and description of the attributes, please click here.
If there is any discrepancy between the forest health information on this website and the original paper versions, the paper originals are considered to be the authoritative ones. Although every effort is made to ensure that all information posted on the forest health website is accurate and complete, its integrity is not guaranteed.
Before downloading the data, please read the Terms and Conditions. If you are using Forest Health aerial survey data for spruce budworm, you will require both the detailed and overview aerial survey data. These two datasets are non-overlapping, meaning that there are no common areas stored in both datasets. The detailed aerial survey has traditionally only been performed in the Northwestern section of the Province.
In addition, particularly in the southern east slopes section of the Province, traditionally a General Forest Health overview survey is performed. This means that the General Forest Health Overview data may contain information on aspen defoliators. Therefore when using aspen defoliator data you must be aware that if you do not have the General Forest Health data you may not have all of the aspen defoliator data for that particular year.
Data is continually being updated, so check back regularly.
