Envirokids Investigate Forest Health Activity Book

The "Envirokids Investigate Forest Health" activity book is targeted at grades 6-7. This activity book introduces children to basic forest ecosystem concepts and the economic, environmental, and social value of the forest. The health and management of the forest is presented to be a very complex and integrated process. Fire, forest insects and diseases are introduced to the children as being natural, yet when out of control devastating to the trees in a forest. The threat of exotic species to Alberta's forests is discussed.

Envirokids Investigate Forest Health Teacher's Guide for Grades 6 & 7

Mountain Pine Beetle Mania - A Junior High Science Resource

Weed Identification in Alberta Brochure

This brochure includes photographs and descriptions necessary to identify the most common restricted and noxious weeds in Alberta.

Management of Woodborers in Coniferous Logs Brochure

This brochure is intended to educate staff and forest industry personnel on this subject and was authored by Dr. Herb Cerezke. It was published in the aftermath of recent wildfires that burnt a substantial amount of conifer logs in the province. The brochure was produced because the impact of woodborers is a major concern in sequencing the salvage of fire-killed timber.

Mountain Pine Beetle Brochure

This informative brochure illustrates and describes the mountain pine beetle life cycle, hosts and damage, and provides information on management strategies and most importantly what you can do to help. As the mountain pine beetle population continues to increase in Alberta, it is necessary to become aware of this destructive pest of lodgepole pine.

Important Forest Insects and Diseases of Alberta Poster (Revised in 2004)

This double-sided 54x 69 cm (24x30.75 in) poster illustrates the major forest insects on one side and the forest diseases and disorders on the other. The following important forest insects are identified: spruce budworm; spruce beetle; mountain pine beetle; white pine weevil; yellowheaded spruce sawfly; Warren root collar weevil; forest tent caterpillar; large aspen tortrix; and Bruce spanworm. The following important forest diseases/disorders are identified: lodgepole pine dwarf mistletoe; Armillaria root disease; Atropellis canker of pine; Western gall rust; Blister rusts: comandra and stalactiform; spruce needle rusts; Elytroderma needle cast; Hypoxylon canker of aspen; and Red belt. This poster was jointly funded by the Canadian Forest Service, and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. It is available in both English and French.

This 27.9x43.2 cm (11x17 in) poster illustrates and describes the mountain pine beetle hosts and damage, and provides information on what you can do to help. As the mountain pine beetle population continues to increase in Alberta, it is necessary to become aware of this destructive pest of lodgepole pine.

Invasive Plants of Alberta Poster (Revised in 2004)

This 63.5x96.5 cm (25x38 in) poster, formerly Problem Weeds of Alberta's Green Area, identifies the following common restricted and noxious weeds: spotted knapweed, scentless chamomile, Canada thistle, tall buttercup, ox-eye daisy, common tansy, toadflax, leafy spurge, field scabious, purple loosestrife and blueweed.
