Special Projects
Introduction to Fire Behaviour DVD
Fire Behaviour is an integral component of all introductory wildfire suppression and wildfire orientation courses. Hinton Training Center, in collaboration with Mammoth Productions, is developing a Fire Behaviour DVD that will introduce fundamental concepts of fire behavior such as definitions and terminology used in the wildfire environment, principles of combustion, fire triangle, and fire growth.
Fire behavior is a product of many influencing factors in the wildfire environment. Fuel, weather, and topography are the key elements that make up the fire behaviour triangle. This Introduction to Fire Behaviour DVD develops the concept of the fire behaviour triangle and the specific factors that influence each side of the triangle.
The Introduction to Fire Behaviour DVD can be used to supplement existing presentations in the Wildfire Orientation, Wildfire Member, Dozer Boss, and Basic Wildfire Suppression courses. This DVD will also be an effective aid in developing awareness in public relations and education sessions.
Wildfire Simulator
What it is
The Wildfire Simulator [PDF (62 kb)] is a decision making training system designed for supervisors responsible for suppression personnel who have had basic theory training in fire behavior, suppression resources, tactics and safety. It is used for various positions employed on a fire ranging from a radio operator to members of a Type 1 Incident Management Team.
Jalisco Crew Training
Wildland Firefighter/Education Training Centre in Jalisco, Mexico
Together Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (ASRD) and the state of Jalisco in southern Mexico have formed the blueprint for a Wildland Firefighter/Education Training Centre. This proposed centre for training Mexican wildland firefighters is based on the Hinton Training Centre model. It is intended that the new Jalisco centre will become a blueprint for wildfire training centres throughout Latin America. The centre will also be home to the Junior Forest Ranger (JFR) program. Training programs, which will include physical fitness tests and Type 1 crew training, are scheduled to begin in February 2007.
In advancing this joint Canadian-Mexican project, the ASRD has also enlisted the support of the Alberta wildfire support industry, Canadian Forest Service, and various international agencies. The ASRD plans to implement additional projects with Jalisco in connection with the proposed centre, as well as firefighter exchange and JFR programs.
