Earthworm
Last Review/Updated: May 31, 2002
Earthworms are long, legless creatures that live in moist soil. They
are found almost everywhere. They make tunnels in the soil and live
in them. Earthworms leave piles of digested soil at the entrances to
these tunnels. When it rains, the tunnels may fill with water, forcing
the earthworms to come to the surface. Each earthworm is both male
and female. Eggs are laid in a cocoon of slime in moist, rich soil.
There is much folklore about cutting an earthworm in two and having
both parts live. The rear half will always die, and the front half
may live to become another whole worm. In Alberta, earthworms spend
winter underground below the frost line.
