Gooseberry Lake is a high alkaline body of water, fed by seepage springs which sustain a variety of interesting plants.
In the upland areas aspen, balsam-poplar woods and shrub thickets create a rich environment for wildlife.

This is a major staging area for migrating shorebirds. Thousands of red-necked phalaropes may be seen on the lake each May and August. Gooseberry Lake is also a late summer staging area for ducks, geese and swans. Other water birds—gulls, great blue herons, and American white pelicans—and shorebirds such as lesser yellowlegs are common in this area.
The park's woods accommodate both small and large mammals. Look for deer mice, red squirrels, chipmunks, snowshoe hares and thirteen-lined ground squirrels. White-tailed and mule deer are common here.
