Stunted aspen growing on sand dunes combine with scattered lakes, grasslands and shrubland to create this intriguing landscape. The sandy aspen parkland contains an unusual mix of boreal forest species like the hermit thrush, grassland species such as the lark sparrow, along with the more typical aspen parkland species. Look for marsh wrens, yellow-headed blackbirds, western meadowlarks and Sprague's pipits. Ducks, geese and swans are common on the waters of Dillberry Lake, and shorebirds and herons frequent its shores.
Thirteen-lined ground squirrels are typical inhabitants of this parkland, where dry sandy soils stunt the growth of trees and shrubs. Wildflowers abound, particularly brown-eyed Susans, crocuses, asters and western wood lilies.
