deerBuffalo Lake is surrounded by rolling hills, part of the "knob and kettle" landscape left by retreating glaciers. The large lake with its many shallow bays provides nesting sites for great blue herons, black-crowned night-herons, plenty of Canada geese and ducks as well as common terns, American avocets and ring-billed gulls. Ross' geese, American white pelicans and piping plovers have also been seen.

The parkland woods are inhabited by white-tailed deer, mule deer, coyotes and ruffed grouse. Colourful northern orioles nest in the tops of the tall trembling aspens, and the descending call of the western wood-pewee is commonly heard. Raptors include great horned owls, short-eared owls, golden and bald eagles as well as many of the hawk species found in Alberta.

Rochon Sands Provincial Park on the southeast side of the lake offers good camping facilities and the best access to the lake.
