Northwest - Parkland / Boreal
As many as 200 bird species have been recorded in parts of northwestern Alberta, and several lakeside sites offer viewing platforms and interpretive programs for visitors.
As one travels north through this region, aspen parkland gives way to aspen and spruce boreal forest, which covers most of the northern half of the province. The successional forests and organic wetlands of the Peace River district provide habitats for sandhill cranes, northern goshawks, bear, moose and deer. Sphagnum mosses, Labrador tea and cranberry proliferate in the bogs and fens throughout the northwest peatlands.
