A network of interpretive trails provides access to this floodplain woodland with its extensive shrub and grasslands, which is home to a wide variety of nesting and migrating birds. The gnarled plains cottonwood trees are a distinctive feature of the area.

cottonwoodAmerican kestrels nest in the cavities of old trees at Police Point, and prairie falcons and golden eagles are also present year-round. Songbirds such as warblers, wrens and swallows particularly favour the combination of shrub and woodland habitat. Along the South Saskatchewan River, look for wood ducks in spring migration, and wintering mallards, common goldeneyes and, occasionally, bald eagles.

Watch for Nuttall's cottontails, porcupines, red foxes and white-tailed deer, all of which are resident at Police Point throughout the year. Consult the Interpretive Centre for up-to-date information on wildlife activities and rare bird sightings in this area.
