The west arm of this intermittent lake, one of the largest lakes in southern Alberta, provides some of the finest marsh habitat in the province.

Double-crested cormorants and black-crowned night-herons can be easily seen from the northern shore, along with marsh wrens, cinnamon teals and American bitterns.

Sightings of such rare species as the Eurasian wigeon, black-necked stilt and snowy egret have been recorded. White-faced ibis, exceedingly rare elsewhere in Canada, have nested at the lake.

Pronghorn can be seen in the surrounding uplands along the northern shore. Badgers and coyotes are common in the area, as are striped skunks and porcupines. Plains garter snakes may be found in the immediate area of the lake.
