Hoodoos and sandstone outcrops form a backdrop for soaring golden eagles and prairie falcons. Pronghorn range across the prairie, and distinctive wildflowers grow in rock crevices and along roadside ditches.
This most arid segment of the province, the short-grass prairie region, supports majestic cottonwood trees along its broad, deep river valleys. In the southeast corner of the province, the forest and open woodland cover of the Cypress Hills are reminiscent of the foothills. Here, deer, elk and moose seek refuge.
