Patches of prickly pear cactus and butte primrose flower amidst the dry grasses of the coulee slopes at the Helen Schuler Coulee Centre in Lethbridge. This area along the Oldman River supports a variety of micro-environments—from shady cottonwoods to dense shrubbery—and attracts a variety of wildlife.

Watch for white-tailed deer, Nuttall's cottontails and porcupines. You may also see great horned owls and northern flickers. Small rodents such as deer mice, meadow voles and northern pocket gophers are found in the river valley. At the nearby Elizabeth Hall Wetlands, keep an eye out for painted turtles. The Helen Schuler Coulee Centre offers interpretive programs, nature walks, and exhibits on seasonal themes. A system of well-signed nature trails leads away from the centre.
