Brazeau Reservoir
Last Review/Updated: May 10, 2002
Coniferous
trees in this area provide excellent habitat for cavity-nesting birds
such as tree swallows and common goldeneyes. The trees are also inhabited
by nesting great blue herons and ospreys.
Ravens nest on the cliffs south of the main dam, and there are particularly rewarding birdwatching opportunities along the south edge of the canal. Northern pike can occasionally be seen in shallow water.
The reservoir houses the greatest concentration of osprey nests in Alberta — approximately 15. Artificial nesting platforms built on power poles have been placed in the water with the aid of a helicopter.
Other species found in the surrounding uplands include wapiti, moose, mule deer, gray wolves and black bear.
This area is particularly attractive for boating, but care must be taken to avoid driftwood and snags just below the water's surface.
