Inglewood Bird Sanctuary
Last Review/Updated: May 10, 2002
Three kilometres of peaceful nature trails lead past floodplain ponds and along the Bow River through grassland, shrubs and riverbank cottonwoods. Two hundred and sixteen bird species and 271 plant species have been recorded here. Prominent birds include bald eagles, Swainson's hawks, nesting great horned owls, ring-necked pheasants, gray partridges and a range of warbler species.
The backwaters and old channels have been protected as a chain of lagoons that provide nesting sites for many ducks and Canada geese. This is likely the best place in the province for seeing wood ducks. Mallards, common goldeneyes and common mergansers live here year-round, along with muskrats and beavers. The sanctuary, only a few kilometres from the city centre, is also home to white-tailed and mule deer, coyotes, foxes and long-tailed weasels.
This is a lovely spot for morning or evening nature walks, and a welcome escape from the bustle of the city during lunch hour.
