Activities

The Scientific Subcommittee has been meeting since January 1999 and can be credited with the following accomplishments. It has:
- considered and accepted the IUCN guidelines for assessment of species at risk;
- helped identify and define new categories needed for species being assessed (e.g., "species of special concern");
- developed a system for setting priorities for data collection and detailed status report production with particular reference to vascular plant species at risk;
- evaluated 58 species and provided its recommendations to the ESCC; and
- recommended priorities for the reassessment of the first set of species to approach 5-years since initial assessment.
Future Activities
Future Activities of the Scientific Subcommittee of Alberta's Endangered Species Conservation Committee The Scientific Subcommittee plans to accomplish the following activities in the future. It will:
- continue to evaluate species potentially at risk in Alberta and pass on its recommendations to the Endangered Species Conservation Committee;
- continue to refine the priority setting system for application to other taxonomic groups such as invertebrates;
- continue to set priorities for reassessment of species as they approach 5 years since their initial assessment
