Directions Document Survey Results Size: 246 KB

Ghost-Waiparous Access Management Planning Process, Public Consultation and Information Process (Phase II) has been completed with these survey results. Begun in October 2003, the public had the opportunity to provide feedback on the Directions Document through a survey. In total, 389 surveys were submitted. Two written submissions from stakeholder organizations were also submitted. Responses on planning priorities, gaps in the directions documents, user profiles and summaries of written submissions are analysed and described for use by the Working Group in developing the Ghost-Waiparous Access Management plan.

In early 2003, over 1,100 Albertans completed written surveys while 400 responded to a telephone survey. The directions document is based on a thorough review of information provided during the first stage of public consultation as well as available resource management information for the study area.

PUBLIC INPUT RESULTS

A major component of the Ghost-Waiparous Access Management Planning Process (Size: 512KB) relates to gathering public input on current and future use of the area. A number of mechanisms were used to gather a wide and representative view on the issues that currently exist in this area. Summary information from each of these input mechanisms is provided below and will be used to assist the Working Group to develop the plan over the next few months.

Public Survey
In January and February 2003, a public survey was released. This survey solicited the publics views and opinions about the existing challenges in the Ghost-Waiparous area and the most appropriate approach to managing human use in the area. Surveys were available at the information sessions, information displays, discussion sessions, on the website, or by calling the toll free line and could be submitted on-line, faxed or mailed back. Over 1100 surveys were completed by the public.

Moderated Discussion Groups
In February 2003, seven moderated discussion sessions were conducted with invited stakeholders. The discussions sessions groups were organized by user group. The specific groups were:

Stakeholders were invited based on their previous participation in the Forest Reserve Multi-Users Dialogue process Size: FRMUD) or by having a specific linkage to the activities in the area. The purpose of the sessions was to identify key issues and concerns about the Ghost-Waiparous area and to generate possible solutions to the concerns. Over 60 stakeholders attended the seven sessions.

Random Sample Telephone Survey
In February 2003, a random sample telephone survey was conducted with 200 rural residents within the Ghost-Waiparous region and 200 Calgary residents. The survey asked respondents about their use of the area and their opinions about how recreational use in the area should be managed. The random sample telephone survey was included as part of the public consultation process to ensure that the views of the average Albertan were considered in the access management plan. Written Submissions
Written submissions were accepted from individuals or organizations wishing to provide in-depth comment to the Ghost-Waiparous access management planning process. Eleven submissions were received. Size: 512 KB

The Ghost River Sub-Regional Integrated Resource Plan is the current policy and planning document of record for the Ghost-Waiparous area.

This plan;

  • originally stated that an access management plan would be prepared for the area, and
  • will be used to provide the context for the access management planning process.

Municipal District of Bighorn's Forest Reserve Multi-User Dialogue Report Size: 500KB
The MD of Bighorn, with support from Alberta Municipal Affairs, developed the Forest Reserve Multi-User Dialogue Report in 1999. This report provides a recent review of issues and concerns that many stakeholder and users of the area felt were important. This information will be used as a primary source of issue identification for the access management planning process.
