South Saskatchewan River Basin Review
Last Review/Updated: November 3, 2004
- Alberta Environment is developing a water management plan for the South Saskatchewan River Basin, including the subbasins of the Red Deer, Bow, and Oldman rivers.
- Although Alberta Environment is leading this plan, Sustainable Resource Development is primarily involved because we are responsible for management of provincial fisheries. Other provincial departments involved include Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development. Federal involvement includes the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
- The South Saskatchewan River Basin water management plan promotes sustainable and environmentally responsible water use in the South Saskatchewan river basin.
- The plan will deal with future water needs for both people and for the health of the river basin.
- There are two phases to the plan:
- Phase One involves the development of rules to decide who gets
water and how much, and how water rights should change hands.
The first phase is ready for implementation.
- Phase Two will try to balance peoples’ water needs with environmental protection in the river basin.
- Phase One involves the development of rules to decide who gets
water and how much, and how water rights should change hands.
The first phase is ready for implementation.
