Cows and Fish

This organization’s goal is to educate and help livestock producers to manage their livestock in ways that protect the health of lands adjacent to streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands, where the vegetation and soils are strongly influenced by the presence of water.

Sustainable Resource Development’s Rangeland Management Branch staff are involved in the promotion and development of the provincial Cows and Fish program.

The Alberta Cows and Fish Program was established in 1992 through a partnership of the:

  • Alberta Cattle Commission;
  • Trout Unlimited Canada;
  • the Canadian Cattlemen's Association;
  • Alberta Environment;
  • Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration; Fisheries and
  • Oceans Canada;
  • and Alberta Conservation Association.

Lead Agency: Cows and Fish (a non-profit society), Sustainable Resource Development is involved as a partner.

Status: Projects coordinated/partnered by Sustainable Resource Development, Rangeland Management Branch staff:

  • In final stages of completing a plant community classification system.
  • An ecosystem health assessment field workbook will be published for wetlands and sloughs.
  • Third edition of Caring for the Green Zone was published in 2003, providing a detailed education awareness message for wetland and stream areas which will be useful throughout Alberta. Rangeland Management Branch provided demonstration case studies for this publication.
  • A recent research project provided better guidelines for linking types of soils with types of wetland plant communities in the grasslands.
  • The Cows and Fish message is exported across Canada, the US and abroad.
