Peace
Introduction
The Peace area, home to the mighty Peace River , has a population of over 111 000 people. The Peace area is one of 11 SRD management areas across the province and covers more than 5.3 million hectares. The area's extensive landbase features largely Boreal Forest Natural Region with a large amount of Foothills Natural Region land that overlaps the Chinchaga area to the west.
It is home to many small towns and the main city, Peace River.
Where to find us
The area head office is in Peace River . Fishing and hunting permits and Christmas tree licences can be purchased at SRD offices in most major towns in the area. See map for locations of area offices.
The local economy
The area supports agriculture, oil and gas and forestry industries. Peace River is also home to an international pulp and paper mill.
Area wildlife
Covered by extensive forest, the Peace region provides habitat for many species such as:
- woodland caribou,
- moose,
- black bear,
- marten,
- beaver, and
- great horned owl.
Tourism and recreation
The Peace area houses some popular recreation areas including Winagami Lake, Notikewin, Greene Valley, Queen Elizabeth and Dunvegan provincial parks. These parks are home to more than 200 species of songbirds and waterfowl, including the majestic trumpeter swan.
As well as provincial parks, the Peace area is home to a multitude of natural and wildland areas. Some noted areas include Chinchaga Wildland (home to the beautiful Chinchaga River ), Peace River Wildland, and the Peace Smoky Islands .
With more than 50 angling lakes, the area offers some of the best fishing spots in Alberta .
Items of interest
The Peace Area hosts a variety of festivals and attractions throughout the year including the popular Peace Festival, Stompede, and the Peace Gospel Jamboree.
