Call for nominations regarding the prestigious Order of the Bighorn

Bighorn Medallion

Nominations for the esteemed Order of the Bighorn are being accepted to recognize and honour the extraordinary efforts of Albertans to conserve provincial fish and wildlife resources.

The Alberta government established the Order of the Bighorn to acknowledge contributions to fish and wildlife conservation that enrich the lives of Albertans. Traditionally, recipients have demonstrated a commitment to conservation over many years. Some past recipients include:

  • Kim Allan, creator of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton;
  • Andy Russell, wildlife author and outdoorsman; and
  • Ducks Unlimited Canada, conservation organization.

Order of the Bighorn nominations and ceremonies take place every two years. The 2008 ceremony will be held this March 7 in Edmonton.

Deserving individuals or organizations become Members of the Order and receive a distinctive silver-coloured medallion, designed to be worn around the neck. The medallion features the head of a Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, with its prominent curved horns. In total, 99 individuals or groups have been inducted into the Order since it was established in 1982.

Nominations must be received by November 1, 2007. A committee that includes Members of the Order of the Bighorn will review nominations and choose those Albertans who have made significant contributions to fish and wildlife conservation in Alberta. Nomination forms are available:
