Land-use Framework Stakeholder Working Groups now under way
From off-highway vehicle use and urban sprawl to property rights, a wide range of subjects and viewpoints emerged during the public phase of the Land-use Framework's consultation process. Seventeen public information and input sessions took place in 15 locations across the province May 15-31, attracting over 750 Albertans interested in how the province's land is used in the long term. More than 3,100 Albertans provided their input through a workbook/questionnaire developed to guide the framework's discussion and development.
The next phase of the framework's development is now under way as four stakeholder working groups propose strategies and actions for government to consider in developing the Land-use Framework.
The four working groups are working in the areas of:
- Growth and Resource Management – how to better direct activities on the land.
- Planning and Decision-making Processes – the development/enhancement of policy and planning processes.
- Conservation and Stewardship – enhancing stewardship and conservation.
- Monitoring and Evaluation – the establishment of tools to monitor and evaluate land-use and natural resource management.
The working groups will build on the information gathered through all the consultations to date, including the stakeholder focus groups of spring 2006, the cross-sector forum of fall 2006 and the public information and input sessions of spring 2007.
The groups will work from June to October 2007. The government will develop a draft framework by the end of December 2007.
The Land-use Framework will help to ensure that Alberta remains a desirable place to live, work and play for generations to come.
