Alberta Forest Week 2007
It’s a springtime tradition - Let’s celebrate Alberta’s forests!
May 6-12, 2007 is Alberta Forest Week. Forestry is fundamental to the lives of so many Albertans. Our forests cover nearly 60 per cent of our total land mass, equalling 38 million hectares or 94 million acres. Those forested lands provide a quality of life and livelihood for thousands of Albertans, with forestry being a significant contributor to the Alberta economy in at least 50 communities.
Here are some ways you can take part!
- Participate in your local Arbor Day activities. Dates vary according to location, so watch for it in your local newspaper or other media.
- Plant a tree! Grade One students in Alberta each receive their very own tree seedling from Alberta Sustainable Resource Development during the month of May. If you don’t know a first-grader, visit your local greenhouse or nursery and pick out a tree that suits you!
- Join the Junior Forest Wardens program. Camping, hiking, canoeing, climbing and snowshoeing are some of the cool activities the JFW’s are involved in. The program is open to kids from age 6-18. Check it out at www.albertajfw.ca
- Nominate your favourite Trees of Renown. If you have a favourite tree that is located on our province’s provincial public lands (not within a municipality), we’d love to hear about it.
- Get involved! The Alberta government is currently looking for input from Albertans from all walks of life, about how you would like to see our province’s lands used for the future, as part of the Land Use Framework process. This important process will give Albertans the opportunity to help shape how our province will grow over the next century. You can attend a public meeting, or complete a workbook on your own time.
Learn more! Alberta Sustainable Resource Development’s Information Centre has two new publications available to the public.

The first, Native Trees of Alberta, is an update to a popular brochure from the past. This is a handy guide to identifying the most common native species in our environment, and what they are used for.

Also just off the presses, is our new children’s activity book, Outdoors-It’s Yours! It’s full of puzzles, colouring, safety tips, games, crafts and other fun stuff for kids ages six to twelve.
Both of these publications are available to the general public, free of charge, by contacting the Sustainable Resource Development Information Centre at:
