Albertans Invited to Help Guide Provincial Fish Conservation

David C. Coutts, Minister of Sustainable Resource Development

As an Albertan who is concerned about fisheries management, it is important that you have a clear picture of how Alberta's fish stocks are managed, now and into the future.

A Fish Conservation Strategy for Alberta 2006-2010 will be the guiding document for provincial fish management for the next five years. It will describe the vision, goals and guiding principles for fisheries conservation in Alberta. This document is revised every five years to ensure that Alberta's fisheries are managed for sustainable benefit

The process for developing the new conservation document is underway. All Albertans are invited to provide their input on proposed changes to management practices by participating in a web-based survey that is being conducted until October 1, 2006.

This survey is available online at www.srd.gov.ab.ca/fw/survey. You can rate your level of support for various proposals and provide additional comments if you wish. A link to the current version of the fish conservation strategy is available as a reference. Please follow the instructions provided on the website.

Conservation of our fish greatly depends on public support. I hope you will take this opportunity to express your thoughts about the management of our fisheries. Thank you in advance for taking the time to provide your important views.
